Whether you are an old hand or a novice, recycling and several other day to day "green" activities reign supreme here. Welcome to La REcyclerie.
Inside, everything is made of wood and bric and brac. For the last eighteen months, among the motley assortment of furniture and plants no less than 550 square meters have been open to people that want to think, act, play, and even eat in an environmentally responsible way.
When they transformed the old Ornano station (a station on Paris’ inner suburban rail system), La REcyclerie’s four founders thought of just about everything. On the left of the entrance is René’s workshop, where you can learn to repair your blender, change the parts on your bike, or give a new lease of life to your outdated possessions. And for those who have a green thumb, there is the "dispensary for sick plants". Its beating heart is right ahead: the waiting room, a 150 square meter eating place that can serve up to 200 people, usually with organic and local foods the remains of which are sorted and recycled to produce vermicompost, a 100% natural fertilizer. The area outside the building is equally appealing: opposite a platform dedicated to a collaborative gardening project enjoyed by the local residents, there is a green roof, an area growing aromatic plants and fungi, as well as an urban farm that is already home to at least twenty animals. Eventually, this large space will also accommodate hives, breed insects and have an unheated greenhouse.
The three R's
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. This governs life at La REcyclerie. With workbenches and tools freely available, and its self-help and empowerment approaches, everyone, regardless of their level of environmental awareness and resourcefulness, can familiarize themselves with today’s new consumer behaviors. Between the DIY (Do It Yourself) and DIWO (Do It With Others), there is more than enough ammunition to gradually convert the hearts and minds of the most recalcitrant people. And what better place to host the events addressing the challenges presented by COP21. With all the workshops, meetings and events organized in partnership with WARN leading up to December, you'll be spoiled for choice as you get involved in preserving our environment in a venue that Veolia also partners.
