Is Zeoform the future’s plastic?

Zeo has developed a new material made from cellulose and water (and nothing else!) which could replace plastic in many objects.

According to the Australian company Zeo this new revolutionary and universal eco-friendly material has all the natural beauty of wood, the versatility of plastic and the strength of fiberglass...

Cellulose is the most abundant organic material on earth. It is not only found in plants, such as hemp and bamboo, but also in industrial, agricultural and household waste such as paper and textiles made from natural fibers. Using a patented formula that duplicates nature’s ‘glue-free’ hydroxyl bonding process, Zeo transforms cellulose into an ultra-strong, durable molding material, called Zeoform. On contact with water, cellulose fibers bond closely, thereby producing a solid material that can be as dense as ebony – but without any glues or chemicals. The process is non-toxic and uses little water and energy. Zeoform can also be recycled, composted, and is biodegradable.

Zeoform is said to offer the same strength as the toughest plastics, and although it can be used in the same way as wood, it is more flexible. The applications are endless! Zeoform can be molded, pressed, sanded, sprayed, injected, laminated, painted, or combined with other materials to improve its properties. Under the expert hands of a craftsman or the precise movements of the mechanical arm of an industrial robot, it can take on any number of different forms. It can be used to create a series of beautiful and functional objects: furniture, tools, building materials, jewelry, musical instruments, glasses...

Zeoform’s flexibility makes it a serious alternative to many plastics (in particular fiberglass), synthetic materials and materials that are potentially hazardous to humans. In short, Zeoform could become the future’s plastic.
