By recycling fish waste to make fertilizer, Recyfish improves the management of this waste and helps make energy savings.
Reverse logistics helps to preserve natural resources and improve manufacturers’ productivity.On the Mediterranean coast of southern France, the heads and guts left from the preparation of the fish ready for sale don’t always end up in the garbage. Now, this waste from the sea can become.... fertilizer. Veolia and STEF, the European leader in refrigeration logistics are behind this new initiative – Recyfish - launched in February 2017.
This first structured approach to recovering fish waste in France has plenty of advantages. In a single circular process, waste that was previously treated as non-recoverable industrial waste is now transformed.
Secondly, Recyfish ensures better management of transport flows. The principle: VEOLIA puts empty containers at the disposal of the STEF teams. When they deliver the fresh fish to their customers they pick up the containers filled with fish waste
And what’s more since the solution is local, it uses less energy. STEF centralizes all the fish waste it collects on its Plan d'Orgon (Bouches-du-Rhône) site. Less than 200 kilometers away in Sète, Veolia uses the waste to produce fertilizer.
After starting in February 2017, Recyfish expects to process 500 tonnes of waste by the end of the year - and up to 2,500 tonnes per year from 2019 because the Recyfish approach is open to all wholesalers, supermarkets and fishmongers.
