Mixing music, ecology and pleasure – that’s the challenge taken up by WE LOVE GREEN, the world’s first fully eco-friendly festival, taking place in Paris on May 31 and June 1, 2014.
They say music soothes the soul. Thanks to WE LOVE GREEN, it takes care of the planet too. This fully eco-designed rock festival was launched in Paris in 2011. “We designed the festival to be a temporary, ephemeral event. Once it’s over, no one would ever know it had taken place,” explains Marie Sabot, who is in charge of this eco-responsible festival coordinated by events agency We Love Art, music label Because and tour management company Corida.
Most French festivals have already taken steps to reduce their impact on the environment, including dry toilets, refundable glasses and waste sorting, but that’s nothing compared to WE LOVE GREEN.
The two temporary stages built in the Parc de Bagatelle this year are made from recovered materials and lit by a solar generator powered by photovoltaic panels and a wind turbine. Bottles and glasses have been replaced by free water fountains, and the organic, locally-produced food is served in biodegradable plates which end up as compost. Lastly, to reduce the carbon footprint generated by festival-goers travelling to the event, the organizers encourage people to use bicycle, car-sharing and the electric-powered transportation services provided.
This all comes at a price, of course, but it’s more than worth it: WE LOVE GREEN is the first French event to be honored with the British A Greener Festival award, which has been presented to eco-responsible festivals for the last 10 years. According to founder Marie Sabot, WE LOVE GREEN functions as a laboratory for testing new eco-responsible solutions – a fact that largely explains its success. “We specialize in events, which are obviously temporary, and this disposable aspect is out of step with modern society. Sustainable thinking isn’t just a fad – it’s a necessity.”
Previous events were attended by more than 10,000 people, with twice that number expected this year. The musical selection – London Grammar, Little Dragon, Foals, Lorde, Cat Power and more – is designed to appeal to a broad audience.
We Love Green Festival, May 31 and June 1, 2014 at the Parc de Bagatelle. Address: 42, Route de Sèvres, Neuilly, 75016 France.
