150 trees for a bioclimatic facade

These trees don’t hide a cabin... but a building. In the center of Turin, architect Luciano Pia created a bioclimatic facade planted with 150 trees.
In addition to bringing nature into the city in a new way, this plant facade helps purify the air and protects its residents from noise too!
Imagine a rainforest suspended at the end of your terrace... but in the center of a European capital. This crazy project was designed and realized by the architect Luciano Pia. 25 Verde is a building in the heart of Turin (Italy). Its special feature is the irregularly shaped natural larch facade planted with 150 assorted trees. Another forest, this time of rusty looking Corten steel girders that blend in with the color of the bark, support this unique plant screen and act as its structure. It clambers over five floors and protects 63 apartments, each with its own terrace. Every terrace has a tree, from 2.50 to 8 meters tall, growing in a huge pot in warm coppery colors. It creates the impression of living in a tree house - but in a city.
A bioclimatic facade also purifies the air
It took five years - until 2012 - for 25 Verde to finally be built. Today its monumental façade in the city center is startling. And because it’s alive it’s not static, changing its appearance as the trees grow and as the colors change with the seasons. The trees have been carefully chosen to provide a wide variety of foliage, blooms and colors. Architectural daring aside, this bioclimatic facade is also an environmentally friendly solution. With the other 50 trees planted in the courtyard, it acts as a green lung in the heart of the city, producing oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide. A natural screen, it protects its residents from all kinds of urban pollution – not only from vehicles but also from noise pollution. In addition, it helps maintain a pleasant temperature inside the apartments all year round. In summer, the lush vegetation provides natural protection against the hot sun, and in winter when the trees are bare, the sun floods in to warm the living spaces. Less energy is required for cooling and heating. 25 Verde has reinvented the idea of the urban jungle, greening things on both the inside and the outside!
